Willem Mengelberg (March 28, 1871 – March 21, 1951) was the conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Around 1902 he met Gustav Mahler and became friends with him; he introduced virtually all of Mahler's function to the Netherlands, and founded a long-standing Mahler tradition of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Mahler regularly visited A Netherlands to introduce his operate by owning a Dutch audience. As a matter of fact, he edited a few of his symphonies when in the Netherlands making the babies healthy better for the acoustics of the Concertgebouw, which is maybe a single understanding that this concert hall & its orchestra is famous for its Mahler tradition.
Willem Mengelberg was a uncle of the musicologist & composer Rudolf Mengelberg and of the conductor, composer and critic Karel Mengelberg who was himself the father of the large improvising piano player & composer Misha Mengelberg.
